Are Vaccines Safe?

Yes, vaccines are safe. According to the CDC, the US currently has the safest supply of vaccines available in history. The most common side effects that occur include pain and swelling at the injection site and are typically mild.

Risks and Benefits of Vaccines

Vaccines have proved to be a valuable tool in preventing the spread of communicable illnesses that once killed or sickened many infants, children, and adults. Your child is in danger of becoming seriously ill or even dying from diseases such as measles and whooping cough if vaccines are not administered.

The most common risks of vaccination are side effects, which are typically minor and include redness and swelling at the injection site, which go away after a few days. Allergic responses that are severe or deadly are uncommon and doctors and clinic staff are trained to handle them.

The risk of side effects from vaccines is far lower than the potential health benefits. The only exceptions to this are cases in which a child has a serious chronic medical condition such as cancer or an immune-system disease, or has previously had a severe allergic reaction to a previous vaccine dose.
